Something About My Face by businesswoman and mother Regina Allen-Wilson is an illustrated story that seeks to teach adolescents to love and accept themselves for who they are.
For a happy and fulfilling life, self respect and self esteem are very important. We should learn to feel proud of ourselves and be happy with what we are. This is easier to learn when you are a young child. A young child is not yet exposed fully to the external world, where materialism is rampant. This books makes an attempt to addres this issue at an early stage in children.
The story unfolds through the voice of Keisha, a young girl struggling to embrace her appearance and accept herself for who she is. The book aims to offer young readers a relatable voice through Keisha's personality and feelings about herself. Keisha's mother soon reminds her that all of her features are exactly right for her, encouraging her to take pride in the unique individual that she has become.
"This book provides a simple yet clear example on how to boost children's self esteem and confidence," Allen-Wilson says. "Children don't need to change; they need to love their inner and outer selves and all the things that make them unique."
The book was inspired by the real-life experiences of Allen-Wilson's daughter Keisha, who is depicted in the story. Noticing that Keisha was already exposed to influence from TV, advertisements and peers in school, Allen-Wilson decided to respond in a way from which other parents could benefit. Featuring original, full-color illustrations, the book is written in rhyming verse. Intended to serve as a learning tool for adolescents Allen-Wilson hopes it will offer an opportunity for parents and children to spend time together and discuss self-esteem issues.
