Achieving peace of mind in daily life is the first thing we should all learn.
All of you will agree with me, we are so busy striving to achieve everything and satisfy everyone that we just forget giving rest to our body and mind. You strive to achieve your goal and there you thinking you have done something when immediately the next goal pops up in front of you.
We always think we should keep ourself busy every moment. Else we feel guilty. I know many of my friends, who even at home, cannot sit quiet for a moment. They always want to keep doing something. There are many who would just be holding the paper in front of them and their eyes are grazing over the printed letters and pictures but mind is not there. It is just thinking of something else. What I want to say is just keep quiet and try to sit for a moment. Don't do anything. See what happens. You will find a complete new life for you there. Just clear your mind of all the irrelevant chatter that keeps on going around in your mind. It is not so easy for the first time but when you start practising to do it you will learn and find it easy over a period of time. Our mind is like a chatter box. It too cannot keep quiet (Except when we are sleeping. Even in our sleep who knows what our mind is doing.). It keeps on thinking one thing or the other. Clearing your mind of these thoughts is clearing the mind chatter. You decide what the mind should think. It is like driving a horse carriage and the mind is the horse. You have to control your mind to go in the direction which you want it to go.
For clearing the mind of unwanted thoughts and to control the mind chatter there are techniques. Remember, sometimes the chatter will be productive and useful. When it is related to what you are doing or what you want to achieve and the thought process is related to it. One way is to focus on what you want to think. Even if the mind is going away from this path, then you should try to bring it back to your line of thought. In the beginning it may happen many times but don't avoid it but reign in the mind into the track which you want it to focus. This way if you do it a couple of times, you will realise that slowly the mind chatter is reducing and the mind and thought processes are coming under your control. I have a friend who treats his brain like one of his friends and keeps giving instructions to his mind. In this way he says he is able to concentrate on what he wants to do and the thoughts that are flowing in his mind are also in the right direction.
Just try this once and see for yourself how you can control your mind. If you have to get up at 6 in the morning then don't keep an alarm. Before going to bed tell you mind more than once that you have to get up at 6 in the morning. (If it is an important job and you cannot be late then ask some else, say your wife or mom, to wake you up if you are asleep at 6am.). Then go to sleep as usual and see if your mind wakes you up at 6am. It will. I have found this to work for me. This proves that you can control your mind and make it work for you instead of you working for it. This is the first step towards achieving peace of mind |
