King Dhana had enormous power, a large army, he had all the powerful weapons like armor, swords, shields, he had horse-men, elephants and a thick fortification around his palace. In contrast, Chanakya whom the king had exiled had only one weapon, his brain. But still he stood in front of the king and swore to defeat him. Ultimately he could defeat King Dhana and tie his loosened hair in the presence of a just and wise king.
Now, a man whose only power was his brain could defeat a powerful king. How could he do it? Chanakya had a lot of confidence and determination. He had the right mindset. Confidence and Determination are the key ingredients. In order to be successful and overcome impossible odds, you require confidence in yourself, the determination to succeed, the intelligence and single mindedness to achieve your goal. With these qualities and hunger to succeed, everything else is secondary and they will all fall into place.
You must have observed, most of us lack the focus and the urge to achieve our goals. Often we try to find reasons such as lack of something for achieving something. Like If I had a better equipment then I could have achieved my goal. If I had a better table and space I could have completed writing the essay. If I had a good camera I would have become a photographer. All these are lame excuses. If you have the fire in your belly to achieve your goal, then you will start working on ways to collect all that is required. If you are finding excuses then it indicates you don't wish to achieve your goal. Chanakya did not have anything to fight and could not have fought the king and won. Still he swore in the royal court to get back his position in the court. That is because he was clear of his goal and was determined to achieve it at any cost. That is the trait of successful people.
I came across this in a book written by Nury Vittachi:
A fitness trainer said two types of people come to him for training. The first type thinks the first step is to go to the shop and buy vast amounts of equipment and sports gear; The second type thinks the first step is to get out of the house and start jogging. The second type wins hands down. The first lot had the gear whereas the second lot had the determination. You have just got to decide to do it and then do it. Make the decision to set out to do it. Once you have started out on the road, you will gather the things you need on the way or they will find you. The Kama Sutra of Business: Management Principles from Indian Classics
